I was sitting on the bus going to school from downtown, crying. I had been hanging out with Tammy Rae Carland, a friend who had turned me on to so many things and changed my life. She introduced me to Fright Wig, the Breeders, and Opal - all the different music I had never heard of. We were in a band together called Amy Carter and Tammy Rae told me about [the feminist avant-garde writer] Kathy Acker. I remember being on the bus and thinking that I had just looked into Tammy’s eyes, and we were so excited about everything that we were going to do. Then I read that Newsweek issue, which said feminism is dead, it failed. I was like, “It’s not dead, I just saw it in her face.” And I felt like I had to go get a bullhorn and tell everyone, because what about all of these fourteen-year-old girls all over the country who believe that it’s over? What if they believe that it’s already happened?
